Q. What is a grass trimmer used for?
Predominately, grass trimmers are used for neatening up the perimeter of your lawn, but in some cases, they have more features that enable you to do more than that.
Trimmers with edging features often allow you to twist the trimmer head so that you can trim vertically instead of horizontal. This can give a neater finish to your lawn boarders.
Some might also have a shrubbing feature, where you can lower the trimmers shaft so its almost flat, this means you can get under low bushes, or garden furniture like benches or trampolines.
Q. What are the different types of grass trimmer?
There are three trimmer power types.
- Battery – this can also be known as “cordless” in some other brands
- Electric – again this can also be known as “corded” in some other brands
- Petrol - this is the last power type, although Flymo don’t produce any petrol products
Q. Should I get an electric or battery trimmer?
Electric – Benefits in continuous power due to being mains powered. Electric trimmers usually have larger cutting widths due to the power available from the corded feature. The only aspect to think of would be where is your power source, will the cable be long enough and will you be required to purchase an extension cable.
Battery– No movement restrictions when it comes to cordless electric or battery trimmers.
Q. What is a ‘bump-feed’ head?
To release more line when using a bump feed trimmer, simply “bump” the trimmer head on the ground. The line limiter will cut the line to the correct length if too much is fed out.
Q. What does “automatic feed” mean?
Trimmers which have this feature will feed out more line every time the trigger is released. This always ensures the trimming is quick, easy and consistent. The line limiter will cut the line to the correct length if too much is fed out.
Q. What does “manual feed” mean?
This process requires the operator to stop trimming, remove the battery or unplug the cord and manually pull out more line. The line limiter will cut the line to the correct length if too much is taken out.
Q. What are the different kinds of cutting equipment?
Most grass trimmers will come with nylon line which will be fed out either automatically or manually. Check out the section on “line feed types” for more information. This usually comes pre-wound on a spool when the product is purchased. Replacing the line is easy and can simply be clipped in to the product when the original line runs out.
Other cutting equipment could be in the form of plastic blades. These are usually used on battery products as they don’t require as much battery usage to rotate and therefore gives the user more run time to work with.
