Innovation comes in many different forms, but very few inventions manage to establish themselves across the world. One such innovation doing so is the robotic lawnmower in Europe and now, in 2016, Flymo explains it looks ever more likely that the UK will be using robotic gardeners in the near future. It just so happens that 2016 is the year that robotic lawnmowing celebrates its twenty first birthday.

Over the past twenty-one years, since the invention of the robotic lawnmower, lawnmowing has had to adapt and mature with the times. A visit to the British Lawnmower Museum, Southport, Merseyside and you will learn that the first lawnmower was invented in 1830 by Edwin Beard Budding of Gloucestershire. It’s said that Budding tested his lawnmower at night at this time as he feared his neighbours would think he was mad. Since the early 19th century lawnmowing has come a long way, with petrol, electric and now robotic models making their way onto lawns around the world.

Robotic mowing is a relatively new concept in the grand scheme of lawnmowing, but it’s probably older than you think. The development of the first solar robotic lawnmower came in 1995 by the Husqvarna Group, Flymo’s parent company. The solar mower was indeed very different to today’s robotic machines however it proved a bold step and a commitment to a new, cutting edge way of gardening. The Husqvarna Solarmower was celebrated as unique not only for its solar cell technology power supply, but also for its entirely new way of cutting grass. The solar mower has been improved and developed until eventually it has evolved into a suitable option for the average UK garden and what better brand in the UK to sit on it than the market leading lawnmower brand Flymo. In 2016, robotic lawnmowing has very much established itself across Europe with Sweden, Germany and Austria now all selling large quantities of robotic mowers.

Britain still lags behind its neighbours somewhat in terms of robotic sales but Flymo has confidence that the market is about to take hold in the UK.

Anne Smith, Trade Marketing Manager at Flymo, believes that while the UK have not yet taken to robotic lawnmowing in the way that Germany or Sweden has it’s simply a matter of time. She said: “We believe that in the future, robotic lawnmowers will become more widely known and will become as common as petrol lawnmowers are in the UK today. Once consumers become more aware of the benefits of robotic lawnmowing more will buy into the concept and start to gain the benefits of robotic mowing. Flymo wouldn’t enter this market unless we really felt that this was a benefit for the end consumers and that it lived up to our brand positioning of Easier by Design. This product really is for people who have better things to do. To show our confidence in the concept and our Robotic lawnmower the Flymo 1200R we are investing heavily in 2016 to grow awareness in the concept and target people who could potentially benefit from this radical new innovation”.

5 things you didn’t know about the Flymo Robotic Lawnmower

1) The Flymo Robotic Lawnmower 1200R works in rain or shine equally well
2) It’s silent, meaning it can cut your lawn throughout the night if you would like it to
3) There’s no need to clear up – the grass clippings are so small they can be distributed back into your lawn without even being noticed and help promote a healthier, greener lawn.
4) Zero emissions – robotic mowing is an environmentally friendly way of gardening, it uses little energy and has zero emissions as well as eliminating grass waste.
5) Simple installation - Programming is simple and works using a boundary wire system to form a perimeter around your lawn, challenging misconceptions that robotic lawnmowers are too complex for everyday gardeners to use. The Flymo 1200R has been specifically designed, with UK gardens in mind, for easy installation and simple programming.
