The invention of the ‘Flymo’ hover-mower by Karl Dahlman came in 1964 based on concept similar to that which a hovercraft used. Dahlman designed a slick, lightweight lawn mower that glided on a cushion of air which proved to be revolutionary within the industry. Since then Flymo has come a long way, now producing high tech hover mowers and robotic lawnmowers alongside many other products.
In a time when lawn mowing was very basic, Dahlman’s revolutionary thinking proved a game changer as he understood exactly what gardeners wanted; a lightweight easy to use lawn mower, that hovers on a cushion of air, cutting under bushes and in difficult areas with ease. Not long after Flymo was formed (1965), the very first electric hover mower glided out of the factory in Newton Aycliffe in County Durham, England.
This innovative lawnmower took the market by storm with Flymo struggling to keep up with demand. Karl Dahlman’s hover mower proved so successful it attracted the interest of the electrical giant Electrolux, who acquired the company in 1969.
Throughout the next decade a variety of newer, more efficient Flymo lawnmowers were designed, and in 1977 the first Flymo lawnmowers were available in the iconic orange colour that you see today.
In 1978 Flymo showed its innovative instincts once again, introducing and patenting the world’s first grass collecting hover mower. In the same year Electrolux acquired Husqvarna who manufactured chainsaws, lawn mowers and cutting machinery in Sweden, Norway and America.
As sales grew the Flymo brand looked to diversify its product range and find new, innovative ways to make gardeners’ lives easier. Here came the birth of the first 2 in 1 lawn trimmer and edger. This pioneering product hit the UK shelves in 1988 and once again took Flymo to the forefront of gardening technology.
It was decided the company needed a bigger, more modern factory to enable it to manufacture products more quickly. The ideal location was found only a few miles from its current location in Newton Aycliffe, where it can still be found today.
This decision soon proved to be the correct one, and Flymo finally, after 24 years of hard and dedicated work, became the UK’s leading lawn mower brand.
In 1994 Flymo aired its first TV ad, advertising the Unique Turbo Compact lawn mower.
2006 saw Husqvarna and the Flymo brands spin off from Electrolux and its shares listed on NASDAQ Stockholm Stock Exchange.
In 2014 Flymo released its Robotic Lawnmower 1200R, a mower which works unassisted. Automatically cutting the lawn, the 1200R is designed for easy installation and mows independently, returning to its charging station when in need of power.
Flymo continues to be a leading brand in the Husqvarna Group. Husqvarna a world leading producer of outdoor products including robotic lawn mowers, garden tractors, chainsaws and trimmers and employs approx. 14,000 employees in 40 countries.
