Gardening Tips May

During May lawns grow faster than at any other time of the year and regular mowing really is needed to keep the lawn looking good. This might seem like more work, but if you cut little and often the job of mowing takes less time and is much easier to do.

Regular mowing and not cutting the lawn too short also helps to keep the grass green and healthy, especially during periods of dry weather.

As grass grows so do the weeds in the lawn and now is the perfect time to apply a lawn weed and feed. Most lawn fertilisers release their nutrients slowly over several weeks to encourage steady growth over a longer period rather than a sudden spurt of growth. The weed killer will control broad-leaved weeds in the lawn without harming the grass. When applying a weed and feed to your lawn, always follow the instructions on the container.

To make your lawn look really good, trim the edges after mowing. This can be done very quickly and easily by using one of the Flymo electric trimmers. They are ideal for trimming long grass along the base of a wall or fence and by simply adjusting the head you can trim the lawn edges to give a neat finish.

Thinking ahead to summer, now is the time to start planting hanging baskets and containers with summer bedding plants to brighten up your patio and garden. To help the plants establish and flower all summer long, add some slow release fertiliser and water storing granules to the compost at planting time.

For something a little different in a hanging basket why not try tomatoes. ‘Tumbler’ is a type of tomato grown in pots and hanging baskets and is very easy to grow. Plants are available at garden centres now and all you do is simply plant two ‘Tumbler’ tomatoes into a hanging basket. Position the plants in a sunny position and keep the compost moist at all times. When flowering starts feed with tomato fertiliser and before too long you will be picking red cherry tomatoes.

Spring flowering shrubs that have finished flowering can be lightly pruned now to maintain a neat shape and to prevent the shrubs from getting too large. The new growth made during the summer will flower for you next spring.
