April 23rd sees the start of ‘Love Your Lawn Week’ and as we start to get some warmer spring weather lawns will also start to grow a little faster. Mowing little and often makes cutting the grass fast and easy and the Flymo Vision Compact hover lawnmower range has everything you need to make mowing pleasurable. The ‘Vision’ window allows you to see the grass in the grass box and the ‘Easi-Reel’ makes for neat and tidy cable storage.
For larger lawns a petrol mower will make light work of mowing and the new Quicksilver range is available in several models to suit all needs. If you want your lawn to have formal stripes the Quicksilver 46SDR with its real roller is just the job. The self-drive models also have a built-in deck cleaning facility. This is a brilliant idea as all you have to do is connect a hose pipe to the top of the mowing deck to wash away grass stuck to the underside.
Grass clippings can be added to a compost bin and mixed with other garden and vegetable waste where they will rot down into garden compost. Where you have large quantities of grass clippings it is worth using a compost additive to speed up the decomposition process.
As weeds start to appear in borders between your plants they should be controlled while still small. One of the most effective ways to kill weeds is with a push hoe. The hoe blade is pushed along the surface of the soil and the weeds are simply chopped off.
If you haven’t already raked your lawn, there is still plenty of time to do it. A quick pass over with the electric Lawnrake Compact 340 will remove and collect dead grass, moss and thatch to leave your lawn less spongy. As a result the grass will grow better and mowing will be much easier.
Spring flowering plants such as pansies and polyanthus in containers will flower for longer if you pinch off the dead flower heads on a regular basis. As the weather warms up, check also that the compost in the container is kept moist at all times as even in showery weather the compost can dry out.
